Bizarre Buffet Podcast – All You Can Eat Weird

Let’s Get Furry ! Furries are people who have an active interest in animal characters with human characteristics. These characters are often created by the community members themselves, who take them on as a “fursona” (an alternate persona) who interacts with other ‘fursonas’ in the community via roleplaying and art.

” Let’s Get Furry” – Show Notes

Question: Have you ever been part of a fan based community ?

FANDOM: The subculture of fans. Fandom is a term used to refer to a subculture composed of fans characterized by a feeling of sympathy and camaraderie with others who share a common interest. (Think Harry Potter, Star Wars, Star Trek, even going to Comic Con!)

Tonight I am taking us inside the lifestyle of a FURRY. This is all   thanks to my acting students who love to incorporate furries into their improv scenes. I had to do a deep dive to see what this was all about !

SO WHAT IS A FURRY YOU MAY ASK ?

Furry is first and foremost a label of self-identification with the furry fandom at large. As a fandom, they prefer to be referred to as furries by non-furries too.

Furries are focused on creativity, culture, and a collective community centered around their love for anthro characters (I.E. Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, etc) . In fact, much of furry culture exists solely in the collective imagination of the fandom, as individual furries enjoy creating their own original anthropomorphic characters. These characters might be based on a wide variety of creatures. They include real animals like foxes, as well as animal hybrids, or completely new species. Some of these characters are called fursonas (a portmanteau of fur and persona). They’re meant to represent who a person would be if they were an animal.

I’ll be honest with you, whenever I hear the word “FURRY”, I always associate it with some sexual kink. There definitely is a stigma. They are FANS not FETISHES !

NOTE THAT NOT ALL FURRIES DRESS IN FULL ANIMAL SUITS !

It’s a common misconception that the furry fandom is about every member dressing up like an animal. Some furries, but definitely not all, might don a fursuit, which is a carefully crafted, custom-made costume that represents either their fursona or another character they’ve created. These can range from as little as just a head and a tail to a full-blown mascot-esque costume.

Believe it or not, we all have more in common with furries than we think we do. They are fans just like any other fan based group !

An article from Women’s Health states, “ Participating in the furry community is no different than supporting your favorite sports team by painting your face and wearing their jersey, engaging in cosplay, or wearing a Slytherin scarf because you love the Harry Potter films.”

  1. FURRIES ARE NOT DYSFUNCTIONAL OR SOCIALLY AWKWARD.

A lot of times in film and television, furries are depicted as socially awkward people. In reality, furries are just expressing a passion for a hobby and interact with others with the same interest. For many joining this fandom is to fulfill a sense of belonging. The way many engage in this fandom is by anthropomorphizing, or in other words making themselves a human version of an animal through art. Some may just watch their favorite TV show .

Yes, there is erotic fan fiction out there. Take for example sexualizing Harry Potter or Star Wars characters. And when it comes to furries having sex with each other, it is pointed out that most people date and have sex with people with whom they share a common interest with . Furries are no different.

“Furries were more likely to be bullied throughout their entire lives,” says Plante. Sixty-two percent of furries report being bullied from age 11 to 18, while 48.3 percent say they were bullied between the ages of 4 and 10. In no way have furries brought bullying onto themselves because they’ve joined the fandom, it’s just the excuse bullies are giving.

THEY ARE NO DIFFERENT THAN US !
